Recent advancements in concrete technology have brought about many emerging tech that will change the construction world as we know it. These emerging technologies in the hard tech include, but are not limited to:
- Ultra-High-Performance Concrete: Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is a type of concrete with improved mechanical and durability properties. It has high compressive strength, can withstand more tensile stress, and is more resistant to scratches and impacts. UHPC has a wide range of applications, including bridge construction and repair, building facades, and high-end architectural pieces. All of AtlantisFiber’s admixtures are UHPC and show a significant carbon reduction if not all the way to a net-zero result.
- Energy-Storing Concrete: Engineers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have created a type of concrete that can store energy and act as a battery. Energy-storing concrete could have applications in creating EV charging roads and in storing excess energy from renewable forms of energy. Researchers found that their new energy-storing concrete could keep 10% more energy than other similar systems.
- 3D Printing: 3D printing technology has proven to be a game-changer in the construction industry. This technology has made it possible to quickly and efficiently produce curved and unique shapes that are virtually impossible to create with traditional building methods. Researchers from the University of Southern California developed a concrete-based ink that can be used to 3D print concrete structures. Potential applications for 3D printing in construction include customized bridges, complex architectural features, and even low-cost houses.
Some Exciting & Emerging Tech
These technologies promise to improve sustainability, durability, and efficiency in the construction industry. As the need for more sustainable and eco-friendly construction practices increases, we can expect to see more emerging technologies in concrete and other building materials being developed in the future. In fact, some new emerging tech was announced by the Global Cement and Concrete Association regarding solar concrete production:
“Fantastic news from our member CEMEX, who reached a significant milestone in its joint effort with Synhelion to develop fully #solar-driven cement production: the scaling of their technology to industrially-viable levels.” ~ Global Cement and Concrete Association
Synhelion’s breakthrough solar concentration technology provides sufficient heat to produce clinker without using fossil fuels. Replacing fossil fuels entirely with solar energy is a game-changer in our #FutureInAction efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Learn more…
